Gift giving season is upon us and while we’re not huge participants in holiday consumerism, we do get a few gifts to put under the tree. And I’d much rather purchase things that are practical or going to be well loved by my kiddos than some plastic characters that will end up in the landfill. So here’s the wellfam roundup – gift guide for 5 year olds!

// I saw this DIY story making kit on Amazon and thought it was so cool! Your kiddo can illustrate their own story and then you mail their creation back to the company. And then they’ll send you a published book in the mail!
// Who didn’t grow up with this velcro catching game!? It’s so much fun for practicing hand eye coordination and it’s a great game to take to the park or beach for the whole family to play!
// If you have a nature lover a set of binoculars would make an excellent gift!
// Both of my kiddos have these fjallraven mini kanken backpacks. I love the simplistic minimal look and that there’s no plastic or vinyl emitting VOCs like many kids bags. And as much as my kids would love a branded bag of their favourite TV characters we try not to subscribe to that culture (just personal preference), so these simplistic bags are a great option!
// My 5 year old has slowly phased out of crayons and markers and is loving coloured pencils. This set is absolutely perfect and comes with a gorgeous canvas roll pouch to keep them organised.
// Ok hear me out. I follow Busy Toddler and saw her son’s adoration for his boom box (do they still call them boom boxes these days LOL). And I thought this would be the most PERFECT gift for my music-loving 5 year old. I remember growing up listening to my mum & dad’s favourite artists and those songs still hold some of the fondest memories of my childhood. I’d love for my kiddos to remember the same. So I’m going to snag a few used CD’s to wrap with his CD player. You bet there’ll be Spice Girls, BSB, N’Sync, and Vengabooys!
// We’re huge lovers of STEM activities (science, technology, engineering, and math) – and this little robot is solar powered and can be assembled into 13 different configurations.
// Vivobarefoot is our family’s #1 choice of footwear. There are so many benefits to having your kids roam barefoot, and these shoes mimic our foot’s natural barefoot motion. The soles are ultra flexible and can be bent / rolled in every direction allowing for healthy biomechanics of the foot. This is crucial for their development (I could go on about this!). But these Primus all weather booties would make an amazing gift under the tree. Use code ‘THEWELLFAM’ at checkout for an extra 10% off!
// PACT is an amazing clothing brand that’s making an impact. They use 100% organic cotton in their clothing which means no toxic chemicals and 81% less water than non-organic cotton. And if you’re not ready to swap out all of your kiddo’s clothes to organic cotton (don’t worry we’re not there either).. a great place to start is with their undies! Checkout this 4 pack boxer brief set, comes in a range of different colours, which would make a perfect stocking stuffer for your little dude (they also have options for girls on the site!).
// You can’t go wrong with a set of walkie talkies for your kiddos. But most of them chew through batteries. Thankfully this set is rechargeable and would make such a great present that multiple kiddos can use!
// Again with the STEM activities! This little toolkit would make a perfect gift for any kiddo who loves tinkering. I’ll be getting one for my 5 year old (so my screwdriver stops disappearing!). And find some old broken keyboards or electronics in the home that he can start to explore.
// If you’re looking for some new sheets for your kiddos, choose organic! Like I mentioned above, it might not practical to purchase all organic textiles. But sheets are another great swap considering they spend 10-12 hours a day sleeping. Pottery barn makes some adorable organic sheets for kids. Yes they’re a bit pricier, but absolutely worth it for the quality!
